Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) is an electronic system that allows recipients to authorize transfer of their government benefits from a federal account to a retailer account to pay for products received. EBT is used in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam. EBT has been implemented in all states since June 2004.

Many supermarkets accept EBT, which contributes to their revenue.

Grocery stores, Convenience stores, Supermarkets and other qualifying merchants can accept EBT as a form of payment and add this government payment channel to their existing card acceptance set-up.

EBT requires you to apply with your state for a Merchant Number, and to procure an encrypted PIN-pad for your POS terminal. More information on PIN-pads.
